When moving into a new home, consider changing all external door locks, they should all have a five-lever mortise deadlock (Kitemarked BS3621) fitted.
Don't leave your door keys in a visible or obvious place, such as under the doormat. Letterboxes should be at least 400mm (16 inches) from any locks and never hang a spare key inside the letterbox, as this is an obvious place that a thief will check. Consider fitting a letterbox cage or other restrictor, which prevents thieves from putting their hands through the letterbox and trying the latches from the inside.
Unless they already have a multi-locking system, sliding patio doors should have anti-lift devices and locks fitted to the top and bottom to stop them being removed from outside. If you are getting new or replacement patio doors, its wise to get specialist advice and ask the your supplier for their high-security specification.
Even small windows such as skylights or bathroom fanlights need locks. A thief can get through any gap that is larger than a human head. Window locks can easily be seen from outside and may put some thieves off, as a thief would have to break the glass and risk attracting attention and possibly cutting themselves on the broken glass.
Lock all doors and windows whenever your going out. Don't leave curtains or blinds drawn during the day as they can attract burglars, but if you are out for the evening close your curtains and leave a light on in the lounge & bedroom (or connect to a timer).
Purchase a door bar or chain and door viewer and use them every time someone calls. Only use the door chain or bar when answering the door, don't leave it on all the time.
If you are planning a holiday, cut your lawn and don't forget to cancel your milk and paper deliveries and ask your neighbour to remove any post or newspapers showing in your letterbox.
DON'T leave ladders lying around and keep your shed or outbuildings locked as burglars will use your tools to gain access.
